The Laboratory Safety and Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) is a written program for ensuring the safe use of chemicals in laboratories at Indiana University. It describes policies, procedures, and control measures that must be understood and observed by all individuals involved in the laboratory use of chemicals.
A safety data sheet, or SDS, is a standardized document that contains occupational safety and health data. The International Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) mandates that chemical manufacturers must communicate a chemical’s hazard information to chemical handlers by providing a Safety Data Sheet. SDS's typically contain chemical properties, health and environmental hazards, protective measures, as well as safety precautions for storing, handling, and transporting chemicals
The purpose of this Manual is to establish the process for compliance with the following documents for Indiana University:
The Indiana University Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan (ECP) is intended to provide Indiana University employees with necessary information, work rules and forms to enable them to comply with the requirements of the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard 29 CFR 1910.1030. This Plan is intended to inform Indiana University employees of the potential hazards associated with contact with human blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) and to provide information on appropriate safe work practices when working with or handling material contaminated with human blood or OPIM.
This Guide serves as a resource for IU employees who participate in activities that generate waste from various campus operations. The primary focus is on chemical waste. Several key concepts are covered, including: an overview of waste regulations; waste minimization and recycling; IU waste collection programs; disposal of specific waste streams; and handling chemical spills.
Wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will reduce employee exposure to hazards when engineering and administrative controls are not feasible or effective in reducing the exposure to acceptable levels. PPE includes all clothing and other work accessories designed to create a barrier against workplace hazards.
