Laboratory Moves
If your lab is moving to a new space, there are few items you will want to consider before you pack the first box. Moving companies will move items like furniture and equipment, but they will not move chemicals. Environmental Health & Safety’s hazardous materials group has the training and experience to move your laboratory chemicals in a safe and efficient manner. Chemical moves can take time, so EHS requires advanced notice to fit such projects into our busy schedule. In order to obtain the necessary information to ensure your move runs smoothly, EHS has developed a new form for requesting this service, which can be found by clicking here.
If needed, our group can provide assistance with segregation and packing in addition to the physical move of chemicals to your new lab. We can also provide a limited number of boxes for chemicals that need to be returned to EHS after the move is complete. Keep in mind that our department does charge an hourly fee for lab move services. Waste removal and disposal remains free of charge, however we reserve the right to charge for the removal and disposal of abandoned chemicals. Thus, it is a good idea to begin thinning out waste chemicals before your move. An individual who is trained in laboratory safety and familiar with the hazards of the chemical handling must be responsible for both packing chemicals to move, and for waste disposal activities such as inventorying. Please do not pass these responsibilities on to untrained, non-laboratory personnel.
Also be aware that due to the safety hazards from abandoned or improperly handled chemicals, failure to follow these guidelines may result in disciplinary action against the Principal Investigator of non-compliant laboratories.
