Laboratory Moves

Are you planning on moving your laboratory to a location in the future? Do you have all the materials you need to make the move? How do you move your chemicals? It is vital that laboratory moves are done in a safe and compliant manner and to assist you we now have an on-line form that once completed will notify EHS of your move so we can provide you the necessary information to ensure your move runs smoothly.

To find out more about this new form as well as to read more about laboratory moves please click here.

No Speeding in the Laboratory

Are you speeding in the laboratory? Have you taken short cuts because you are in a hurry? Recently the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report which suggests that the researcher responsible for the contamination of a relatively benign H9N2 bird flu strain with the deadly H5N1 was in a rush to attend a lab meeting.

Please click here to read more about the dangers of speeding in the laboratory as well as other speeding accidents.

High Pressure Reaction Vessels

We are finding some of our laboratories are using high pressure reactor vessels such as a Parr bomb which can be seen in the picture to the right. Please be aware that operations using high pressure must be performed in specialized chambers equipped and designed for this purpose.

There are commercially available high pressure reactor vessels that are designed and manufactured to ensure safe operation when used within the temperature and pressure limits for which they are rated. Any documentation and manuals that pertain to the reactor vessel in use must be thoroughly read and understood.

Please understand that in the end it is the user’s responsibility to make sure that the selected vessel is compatible with the reagents and conditions to which it will be exposed during the experiment.

To find out more please click here to read Safety in the Operation of Laboratory Reactors and Pressure Vessels by Parr Instrument Company. Please also click here to view a video produced by Northwestern University about pressure vessel safety.

Radiation Safety Newsletter

If you are a Permit Holder do you know the Radiation Safety Office requirements for laboratory relocations or laboratory decommissions? If you are planning a sabbatical do you know the requirements of a designee to maintain your permit? Find the answers to these questions and more in the recent Radiation Safety Newsletter found here.
